This service dramatizes the whole story of God’s love for the world. We light the new fire to dispel the darkness, and from that fire the Paschal (Easter) Candle is lit and carried through the darkened Church. As we process to the altar we sing the Exsultet, an ancient and solemn chant declaring Christ’s victory over sin, darkness, and death. From the Paschal Candle other candles are lit, and darkness begins to flee before the light, the Light of Christ. We remember the grand narrative of God’s salvation story as Scripture is read and we respond with songs. And then we end our long lenten fast with the Great Acclamation: “Alleluia, the Lord is risen indeed!” Our Easter celebration begins with a glorious celebration of the holy communion.
